Letter to Steve Jobs
CEO of Apple Computer, Inc.
Dear Mr. Jobs,
"Never underestimate the power of one man and one mac to change the world."
This quote, from page 66 of Goodbye Gutenberg, best captures the spirit of the coming Renaissance in designer books. There are so many exciting things happening in audio and video that we've almost forgotten how exciting a time it is to be a book designer.
Goodbye Gutenberg is a wake up call for anyone interested in the future of reading and writing in our multimedia age. It was created entirely on a Mac - and not just any Mac, but a G5 with 4 gigabytes of RAM and 500 gigabytes of hard disk space. Earlier drafts were created on a G4, but as you can imagine, with such large files I struggled to create the stunning special effects and to move seemlessly between layout, illustration, and imaging.
That such a book is now possible and affordable, and can be created by a high school teacher such as myself, is testimony to your vision and to the many wonderful contributions you have made to our culture.
Warmly,
Valerie Kirschenbaum
